Challenges in the life of Day Scholar Students
Challenges faced by Day Scholars
Modern life is full of demands, frustrations, problems and deadlines. Everyone experiences stress as it is a natural part of human life. Our bodies have a built mechanism for responding to stress. However, during a certain period of time, people tend to face more stress than usual. One of such periods is college life.
It can be very stressful for some people, especially for those who are not used to carrying out with so many responsibilities. Students spend most of their time balancing classes, projects, tests, final exams, personal life, and work; that is enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed. This stress can cause multiples problems, not just emotional, but physicals as well.
For those students who are not living in the hostel and who travel between home and school every day, basically known as Day Scholar Students or Non- Hostler students, faces major problems as they travel during the day to reach college and back to home. And didn't get the sufficient time to complete the studies at the time. They are not bound by the rules and regulation as hostler, but they faces day-to-day difficulties in much other ways which a hostler can't even imagine.
Types of Stress in the life of Day Scholar :
- Stress due to Time Management : They need to wake up early in order to be on time. They can’t afford to snooze their alarm because that might mean a missed bus and eventually a missed first period and a half point less on your attendance score. They just can’t help but be jealous when hostelers say “I just woke up half hour back”.
- Stress of Managing everything alone : Talking about study, making a group project or making friends or being a part of any gossip, day scholars are always last one to approach. They just can't sit idle after classes as they have to reach back home unlike hostlers they can't enjoy nights with friends.
Pros of being a Day Scholar Students :
- It becomes a problem to manage time effectively and distribute it to have balance. A lot of students are used to leaving all the work for the last minute. They follow a false idea that everything can be done before the deadline. However, it is not the case with education. Procrastination makes students do things halfway and not retain all needed information.
- They get late due to the physical issues which are unpredictable, sometimes bus tire gets puncture or its a heavy rain, or they get stuck in the traffic. Number of reasons are there causing them to skip the first lecture or reaching late, and then college professors don't allow them to sit in the lecture.
- Somedays students are not willing to attend the class because in whole 9-5 schedule there is one class. So bring a day scholar they have to come attend the single class otherwise they'll loose the attendance, unlike hostlers they don't have privilege to come anytime required from a block away only.
- Sometimes after reaching college, they get to know the classes are cancelled and the students who uses college transport have to spend there day roaming or trying to occupy the time, regardless of hostlers who can peacefully sleep after knowing the cancelled schedule.
- Day Scholars do not have the comfort of a nearby room. They will have to lug heavy books everyday. They do not have experiences of night outs. They cannot experience the solidarity of the hostellers.
- If day scholars are ill, or if they had any issue, they have no other option but to travel back home. Hostellers can go and rest for an hour and come back once they feel better.
- They do not get to be independent from their parents. They do not learn the much needed financing skills. They do not know the basic survival skills in hostels. They do not have birthday experiences in hostels. Those are something for sure.
These effects of constant stress on a day scholar student’s body are devastating and may have long-term consequences. When stress escalates without coping with it, numerous troublesome psychological and physiological conditions may occur. First, the stressful life of college students may result in such physical problems as sleeping disorders, breathing difficulties, headaches, and a loss of appetite. In addition, fatigue, colds, weight change, teeth grinding, increased alcohol and drug use are also common. Unfortunately, stress is often linked to the immune system suppression. It increases the chances of altering any existing disease. teeth grinding, increased alcohol and drug use are also common. Unfortunately, stress is often linked to the immune system suppression. Second, stress may result in a number of emotional problems. The most common ones are the feeling of being overwhelmed, depression, fear, and anger. However, students may also experience irritability, mood swings, bad temper, worrying, nervous laugh, and crying spells.
